Charles Haddon (C.H.) Spurgeon (June 19, 1834 January 31, 1892) was a British Reformed Baptist preacher who remains highly influential among Christians of different denominations, among whom he is still known as the "Prince of Preachers." In his lifetime, Spurgeon preached to around 10,000,000 people, often up to 10 times a week at different places. His sermons have been translated into many languages. Spurgeon was the pastor of the New Park Street Chapel in London for 38 years. In 1857, he started a charity organization called Spurgeon's which now works globally. He also founded Spurgeon's College, which was named after him after his death.

Spurgeon was a prolific author of many types of works including sermons, an autobiography, a commentary, books on prayer, a devotional, a magazine, and more. Many sermons were transcribed as he spoke and were translated into many languages during his lifetime. Arguably, no other author, Christian or otherwise, has more material in print than C.H. Spurgeon.

In "The Great Sin of Doing Nothing," Charles Haddon Spurgeon emphasizes the grave sin of inaction among God's people. Preaching from Numbers 32:23, where the tribes of Reuben and Gad request to settle rather than help their brethren fight for the Promised Land, Spurgeon condemns idleness and urges Christians to actively engage in God's work. He highlights that failing to serve the Lord is a sin against God and discourages others, leading to spiritual decay and eventual punishment.

This sermon was delivered on August 5, 1886 at the Metropolitan Tabernacle and was originally published in Volume 32 of the Metropolitan Tabernacle Pulpit.

As usual with Spurgeon, he takes the text and views it from an unexpected perspective. He establishes all access to God through the precious blood of Christ.
He proceeds to trace the closeness to God enjoyed by the Israelites, by the priests of Israel and the High Priest. He also closely examines the proximity to God felt at Sinai.
How blessed we are to be made near to such a glorious and holy God!
